This is the March 2025 soft launch of "Inflection Point", the Berkeley Political Economy Podcast, hosted by Dylan J. Riley & J. Bradford DeLong. Here we have the brilliant John Ganz on to discuss...
Lotta stuff to unpack on how we got here. As a 62 year old, the tipping point was the moral majority. We went from making fun of Jesus freaks to all the hot babes in town turn into church girls. It was personal. The impact of Limbaugh around 1990 was huge. When I was a kid, if you were poor, dumb, had a pickup with a gun rack, we’re from the south, then you were a card carrying dem. Turning the yokels was next level. Can’t believe it’s led to this. Disbelief.
Thanks for the podcast. I haven't read the book. After hearing this podcast, I won't. By the end, the podcast sounds similar to a failed attempt at sanewashing of current economic policies; there must be something to it. Even for the historical episodes, you make it sound like what happened was clear to the people then, and is both clear and inevitable in retrospect. No contingency or dumb luck (e g. the low-information voter in the last election) or other possible ways things could've gone. Also, a suggestion for future podcasts: please use smaller words and shorter sentences. That may help expand your audience. If the target audience is that of a grad school seminar, then what you have here is fine.
Is it possible to find this episode on a normal podcatcher so I don't have to listen in the substack app? Been looking for it and none of the normal ones seem to have it.
I've been meaning to read this book for a while and finally ordered it today. I was a young adult during that period, so it will be a trip down memory lane.
Has John has read "The Nineties," by Chuck Klosterman? It mostly focuses on pop culture but also touches on politics. I suspect John's book books pair well with it.

Very good analysis of Napoleon III

This was the smartest podcast I’ve listened to, and I listen to a lot of them!
:-) Thx much...

Really enjoyed this discussion! Great historical insights and points from all involved.
